Sedation Dentistry Virginia Beach
We offer three different types of Sedation Dentistry Virginia Beach depending on your comfort level and desired experience. The three sedation options we offer are oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and inhaled Nitrous Oxide sedation. Being sedated not only means you can be more relaxed during the procedure, but it means we can carry out more operations during your visit. Getting multiple operations done in one visit means less time for you to have to spend in the dentistry. During the operation you will be comfortable with blankets, pillows, and can even listen to your music.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is for people who either have anxiety, or just want to be able to relax and not have to be awake during an operation. Sedation dentistry allows us to put you to sleep so that we can carry out procedures without you having to be awake. This helps our patients relax, however it is not the best option for everyone. Some people prefer to be awake during the procedure and just want to be numbed up.
Sedation Dentistry Options
IV sedation will put you under completely for a short period of time. Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas” and Oral Sedation puts you in a sedated state but you are still awake. Under Nitrous Oxide, you may feel funny and you will be very relaxed. Each option works for procedures, it just depends on your personal feeling and comfortably as to what you want to do for your procedure.
Am I A Candidate For Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is great for people who have fear or feelings of anxiety with visiting their Virginia Beach dentist. You may want to consider sedation dentistry Virginia Beach if you feel anxiety in the dentist office, have a low pain threshold, or have very sensitive teeth. Some patients may also have a strong gag reflex, which may require us to use a sedation method to carry out your procedure. Another reason to be sedated is if you have a lot of work that needs to be done. Being sedated allows us to work more efficiently, all while you are more comfortable during the procedure.

What Is Oral Conscious Sedation?
Thirty minutes before the procedure, a pill known as Halcion or a similar type of pill is given to the patient. The pill will make the patient relaxed and drowsy, however the pill will not put you to sleep completely. Under the pill, you are still able to respond and comprehend what is going on.
What Is IV Sedation?
IV sedation is delivered through an IV, and begins to work immediately. IV sedation puts you to sleep entirely, and allows you to pretty much sleep throughout the entire operation. It is important to make sure you have some way to get back home after the procedure is over, as you cannot drive for 24 hours.
What Is Inhaled Minimal Sedation?
With Nitrous Oxide sedation, a mask is used to allow gas to flow in as you breathe, making you feel relaxed while being fully awake. The effects of Nitrous Oxide will wear off almost immediately after the mask has been removed. A lot of people go with this option because they want to be able to drive themselves home after the procedure.
